HBO Boxing World Championship Challenge at the Tampa Convention Center in 1991

American Eric Griffin, the 106-pound world champion in 1991, beat Cuba's Rogelio Marcelo 36-10 in a buzz-saw boxing match Saturday at the World Championships' Challenge at the Tampa Convention Center. Other Americans to win were Oscar De La Hoya (132 pounds) over Puerto Rican high school student Jose Martinez (fight stopped at 1:14 of the fourth round), and Larry Donald (super heavyweight) 16-14 over Cuba's Roberto Balado. In the other bouts: Cuba's 201-pounder Felix Savon knocked out Bae-Chae Sung in 13 seconds with a vicious right; Cuba's Arnaldo Mesa beat American Ivan Robinson 21-9 at 125 pounds; and the Commonwealth of Independent States' Andrei Kurnivakia beat Germany's Torsten May 15-5 at 178 pounds.
