This light welterweight non-title bout was scheduled as a tune-up fight for Chávez's upcoming bout with Greg Haugen, who fought on the undercard that evening.

THE OPPONENT - Marty Jakubowski of Whiting, IN, came to the ring in solid back trunks accompanied by "Enter Sandman." The young challenger, a sociology student at Purdue University, had to eat a full breakfast and put a roll of quarters in his pocket to make weight for the morning weigh-in. With an undefeated record of 37 wins but only 8 by knockout he was obviously not a heavy puncher, but was hoping to win on points by moving and jabbing. His purse for this fight at $25,000 was far greater than his previous career high of $1,000 so this fight gave him both the opportunity to make some good money and get a chance to beat a legend.
